When we watch the news and consider what is going on around us, it is easy to start feeling fearful. That fear leads us to look for “good guys” and “bad guys” that we can either trust in or blame so that we can regain some inner peace. It’s so easy to fall into the trap of blaming and fighting against people and trusting in and looking to people. Both of these reactions, while they may temporarily bring a sedative effect, are counterproductive. We start feeling ill will towards our neighbors and friends. So and so voted for the “bad guys”, or the “good guys” disappointed us and didn’t accomplish what we expected of them. We’re tempted to blame political parties, political organizations and ideals, celebrities or social figures, and even entire social classes or people groups. Take a deep breath. You know this isn’t you. You know the fear and the hate and the blame isn’t what you were made for.
The fact of the matter is, we’re not wrestling against flesh and blood. The battle we are in (and yes, it is a battle — I am not being melodramatic) has been going on long before we were around. It was around long before the Democrats or the Republicans were around. It’s older than Hollywood, older than the “Deep State”, older than the Civil Rights movements, older than the US Constitution. This is a battle between Satan and God Most High himself. It is a battle that involves principalities and powers in heavenly places, and it won’t be fought and won with physical tactics because it is not a physical fight.
We know who wins this fight. In fact, he already has. Our Father has invited us to join in with him and “practice” learning to fight spiritual battles. It’s an amazing way to get to learn….we’re fighting in a battle that he’s already won, so there is no way that we can mess it up.
So you’re invited. You’re invited to let go of the vain grasping for some sort of victory through laying blame and aligning with human organizations. You’re invited to learn to fight spiritually, in the way that really matters. When things shift spiritually, things change physically. The physical unrest and upheaval we see are symptoms. Let’s learn to make a difference deep down at the roots.
Scriptures to pray:
Proverbs 3:5-6 English Standard Version (ESV)
5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
and do not lean on your own understanding.
6 In all your ways acknowledge him,
and he will make straight your paths.
Woe to those who go down to Egypt for help and rely on horses, who trust in chariots because they are many and in horsemen because they are very strong, but do not look to the Holy One of Israel or consult the Lord!
Ephesians 6:10-18 English Standard Version (ESV)
The Whole Armor of God
10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. 14 Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. 16 In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; 17 and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, 18 praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end, keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints,
Jeremiah 2:12-13 English Standard Version (ESV)
12 Be appalled, O heavens, at this;
be shocked, be utterly desolate,
declares the Lord,
13 for my people have committed two evils:
they have forsaken me,
the fountain of living waters,
and hewed out cisterns for themselves,
broken cisterns that can hold no water.
English Standard Version (ESV)
Ask that God would open our eyes to see ways that we have sinned by trusting in people, organizations, political parties or politicians, institutions, or any thing other than God himself. Are there broken cisterns we have been drinking from?
Ask God to fill us up with His love and Spirit so that we look to Him alone for deliverance and not to any thing else.
Repent for any ways that we have fought against our neighbors in the flesh by word or deed or by harboring ill will towards them. Ask God for mercy, grace, strength, and insights so that we can bless our neighbors and do good to those we may even consider our enemies, so that we can show the love of God the Father to them. His kindness leads to repentance. Ask God to open our eyes to way that we can pour out kindness to those around us.
Ask the Father to open our eyes so that we can see what HE is doing, rather than constantly looking to see what our favorite “hero” is doing to help us. We want eyes open prayer.
